How the speed passage is marked

You start with 40 marks and lose one for every mistake.

Each mistake or extra word-1 mark

PassageAbout 210 words in 7 minutes = 30 WPM

This practice also counts each word of the passage you did not reach as a mistake, because an unfinished passage loses marks in the same way.

Set up this practice test like the exam

Each run is a 7-minute speed passage cut to 210 words, marked the GCC-TBC way: 24 mistakes is the most you can make and still pass. Marathi and Hindi default to Mangal InScript; Remington is offered too. Type the whole passage - every word you do not reach costs a mark.

Practise the 7-minute speed passage

Take the 30 WPM speed passage in Marathi, English or Hindi and see how many of the 40 marks you would keep.

Worked example: a speed passage that passes

The formula

Marks = 40 - mistakes - untyped words

Pass = 16 marks or more

The attempt
Passage
210 words, 7 minutes
Words not reached
6
Mistakes
11
Working it out
  1. Marks lost11 + 6= 17
  2. Marks40 - 17= 23 / 40
  3. Pass check23 against 16= clears
Passed23 marks - with room for 7 more mistakes.

TipFinishing the passage matters as much as accuracy: each word you do not reach is a mark gone.

The mistake that fails most candidates

Leaving the passage unfinished. A candidate who types cleanly but stops 20 words short has already lost 20 marks. Practise until you finish 210 words in under 7 minutes with fewer than 10 mistakes, and you will pass with a margin.

What to practise, and what to avoid

The speed passage is 40 of the 100 marks. Protect them.

Do this

  • Practise full 7-minute passages until you finish with time to spare.
  • Use the 3-minute trial to warm up, not to rush.
  • Prepare the practical too: letters, statements and email.
  • Revise basic computer knowledge for the objective section.

Avoid this

  • Adding words that are not in the passage - each one costs a mark.
  • Ignoring one section - 40% is needed in each.
  • Switching between Marathi layouts while you practise.
