For the clerk-cum-typist posts at Graduate and Undergraduate level: 10 minutes in English (30 WPM) or Hindi (25 WPM), with no backspace at all. Mistakes up to 5% of the words you type are forgiven, and each one after that deducts 10 words. Hindi is typed in Kruti Dev 010 or Mangal on the Remington GAIL layout.

About the RRB NTPC typing test

No backspace, ten minutes, and a 10-word penalty for every mistake past the free 5%.

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) fill Non-Technical Popular Category (NTPC) posts at Graduate and Undergraduate level. For the clerk-cum-typist and time-keeper posts, candidates who clear CBT 2 take a Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) in English or Hindi - the language chosen in the application.

The test is qualifying: it adds no marks to your merit, which comes from CBT 2. But the rules are among the strictest of any typing test: you cannot correct anything you type, so every slip stays on the record.

Where typing fits in the selection

Your rank comes from CBT 2. The typing test decides whether you keep a typist post.

  1. CBT 1ScreeningA common computer-based test that shortlists candidates for CBT 2.
  2. CBT 2MeritThe post-specific computer-based test. Your merit comes from here.
  3. Typing skill testQualifying10 minutes, no backspace. Fail it and the typist posts are out of reach.
  4. DV and medicalLast stepDocument verification and the medical examination for shortlisted candidates.

What the exam screen looks like

A plain screen, and no way back: whatever you type stays.

Screen ruleWhat to expect
LayoutPassage on the upper half of the screen, typing box directly below it
BackspaceDisabled - you cannot erase anything
Delete and arrow keysDisabled, along with every other editing tool
Word / error highlightingNone - mistakes are not shown
Auto-scrollNone - keep your own place in the passage
Warm-upAbout 1 minute of practice typing before the test, not marked
Passage lengthAt least about 1,500 keystrokes in English and 1,250 in Hindi (2025 sittings: about 1,800 and 1,500)
Finished earlyType the passage again from the beginning until the 10 minutes end

From RRB's CBTST instructions as reported, and candidate feedback from the 2025 sittings. Check the instructions on your admit card.

Set up this practice test like the exam

This page already starts with backspace off and no highlighter. In the test settings, also turn auto-scroll off and hide the live speed. One difference to know: on this practice test, reaching the end of the passage ends the attempt, while in the real test you would start the passage again - so judge yourself on the speed and mistakes, not on finishing.

Practise without backspace

Take the 10-minute test with backspace switched off, marked with the 5% relaxation and 10-word penalty, and see your net speed the moment you finish.

How mistakes are counted

Every mistake is full (counts as one) or half (counts as half). With no backspace, every slip counts.

WeightMistakeExample
FullOmissionA word in the passage that you left out
FullWrong wordTyping "station" where the passage reads "stations"
FullSpellingTyping "raliway" for "railway"
FullRepetitionTyping "the the train"
HalfSpacingTyping "goodstrain" or "tr ain"
HalfPunctuationA missing comma or an extra full stop
HalfCapitalisationTyping "indian" for "Indian"
HalfTranspositionTyping "train goods" for "goods train"

Full / half classification as reported from RRB's CBTST guidelines. Capitalisation applies to English only.

The 5% relaxation and the 10-word penalty

Mistakes up to 5% of the words you type are ignored - type 400 words and 20 mistakes cost nothing. Every mistake past that deducts 10 words, and the rest is divided by 10 minutes, so each extra mistake costs a full 1 WPM. Type fewer than 300 words in English or 250 in Hindi and the attempt is not evaluated at all.

Worked example: an English attempt that qualifies

The formula

Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes / 2

Final = mistakes - 5% of words typed (never below 0)

Net WPM = (words typed - final x 10) / 10 minutes

The attempt
Test length
10 minutes
Words typed
420
Full / half mistakes
22 / 8
Working it out
  1. Minimum words420 against 300= met
  2. Mistakes22 + 8 / 2= 26
  3. Relaxation420 x 5%= 21
  4. Final mistakes26 - 21= 5
  5. Words deducted5 x 10= 50
  6. Net speed(420 - 50) / 10= 37.0 WPM
  7. Speed check37.0 against 30= clears
QualifiedTwenty-one of the 26 mistakes were relaxed, so only 50 words were lost. 37.0 WPM clears the 30 WPM bar.

TipSeven more full mistakes would have cost 70 more words and left exactly 30.0 WPM - right on the line.

Worked example: a fast Hindi attempt that falls short

The formula

Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes / 2

Final = mistakes - 5% of words typed (never below 0)

Net WPM = (words typed - final x 10) / 10 minutes

The attempt
Test length
10 minutes
Words typed
300 (30 WPM gross)
Full / half mistakes
20 / 10
Working it out
  1. Minimum words300 against 250= met
  2. Mistakes20 + 10 / 2= 25
  3. Relaxation300 x 5%= 15
  4. Final mistakes25 - 15= 10
  5. Words deducted10 x 10= 100
  6. Net speed(300 - 100) / 10= 20.0 WPM
  7. Speed check20.0 against 25= falls short
Not qualifiedA 30 WPM gross speed looks safe, but ten mistakes past the relaxation cost 100 words - a third of the attempt - and left 20.0 WPM.

TipFive fewer mistakes would have qualified at exactly 25.0 WPM. Without backspace, slowing down to avoid slips is the only correction you have.

The mistake that fails most candidates

Practising with backspace. If you fix slips as you go, your practice results hide how many you make. In the CBTST every slip stays, and past the free 5% each one costs a full WPM. Practise with backspace off from the first week, and aim for 40+ WPM English or 35+ Hindi with mistakes under 5% of the words you type.

Choosing your Hindi font

Both Hindi options use typewriter (Remington) key positions. InScript is not offered.

Kruti Dev 010

Remington keys, non-Unicode

The classic typing-institute font. If you already type Kruti Dev, keep it.

What to practise, and what to avoid

Small habits decide a no-backspace test. Keep the left column; drop the right.

Do this

  • Practise with backspace off, every time.
  • Type at a pace where you rarely slip - steady beats fast here.
  • Keep typing past a mistake; it cannot be fixed, so do not stop.
  • Make sure you type at least 300 (English) or 250 (Hindi) words.
  • If you finish early in the exam, start the passage again from the top.

Avoid this

  • Reaching for Backspace, Delete or the arrow keys - they do nothing.
  • Pausing to stare at a mistake - it costs time and the mistake stays.
  • Practising Hindi on InScript - it is not offered.
  • Stopping at exactly 30 / 25 WPM gross - mistakes pull the net figure down.

Frequently asked questions

What typing speed is required for RRB NTPC?

30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi, as net speed, in a 10-minute test.

Which RRB NTPC posts need the typing test?

Graduate: Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist and Senior Time Keeper. Undergraduate: Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Junior Time Keeper.

Is the typing test the same for Graduate and Undergraduate posts?

Yes. The speeds, the 10 minutes, the no-backspace rule and the mistake formula are the same at both levels.

Is backspace allowed in the RRB NTPC typing test?

No. Backspace, Delete, the arrow keys and all editing tools are disabled. Whatever you type stays.

Is the typing test qualifying?

Yes. It adds no marks; your merit comes from CBT 2. But you must qualify it for a typist post.

How is net speed calculated?

Add your mistakes (half mistakes count half), take off 5% of the words you typed, multiply what is left by 10 and subtract it from the words typed. Divide by 10. Example: 420 words, 26 mistakes, 21 relaxed, 5 x 10 = 50 deducted, 370 / 10 = 37.0 WPM.

How many mistakes are allowed?

Mistakes up to 5% of the words you type are ignored. Each one after that deducts 10 words, which is 1 WPM of net speed.

Is there a minimum number of words?

Yes. Type at least 300 words in English or 250 in Hindi, or the attempt is not evaluated.

What if I finish the passage before 10 minutes?

Start typing it again from the beginning and continue until time runs out.

Is there word highlighting or error highlighting?

No. The passage is shown on the upper half of the screen with no highlighting and no auto-scroll.

Which Hindi fonts can I use?

Kruti Dev 010 or Mangal, both on the Remington GAIL (typewriter) layout. InScript is not offered.

Can I choose the typing language on the day?

No. You type in the language you chose in your application.

Is there a warm-up before the test?

Candidates report about 1 minute of practice typing before the 10-minute test. It is not marked.

How long is the passage?

At least about 1,500 keystrokes in English and 1,250 in Hindi; candidates in the 2025 sittings reported about 1,800 and 1,500.

What speed should I practise at?

Aim for 40+ WPM in English or 35+ in Hindi, always with backspace off, keeping mistakes under 5% of the words you type.

Is this the official RRB typing software?

No. 91Typing is an independent practice platform. It follows the published rules - 10 minutes, no backspace, the 5% relaxation and the 10-word penalty - so your practice reads the way the real test will.
