01About this test

02Rules
- 1Duration: 15 minutes per language. English is typed first, then Hindi.
- 2Qualifying speed: 30 net WPM in English and 20 net WPM in Hindi.
- 3Net WPM = (words typed - wrong words) / 15. Each wrong word costs a whole word.
- 4Backspace is allowed throughout.
- 5The screen highlights the current word and wrong words, and scrolls the passage for you.
- 6Hindi is typed in Unicode on InScript or Remington GAIL - you choose the layout before the test.
03How you are scored
Net WPM = (words typed - wrong words) / 15 minutes. Qualify at 30 WPM English and 20 WPM Hindi.
04Important notes
- Higher speeds earn a higher scaled typing score - 30 WPM English and 20 WPM Hindi only reach the qualifying band.
- CPCT also has a 75-minute MCQ section on computer and general awareness, which this practice does not cover.
About the MP CPCT typing test
One certificate, valid for seven years, that most MP clerical jobs ask for.
The Computer Proficiency Certification Test (CPCT) is run by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. A CPCT scorecard is required for Data Entry Operator, IT Operator, Assistant Grade 3 and many other posts in MP government departments, and it stays valid for 7 years. The exam is held several times a year.
The typing section has 15 minutes of English and 15 minutes of Hindi. To qualify you need 30 net WPM in English and 20 net WPM in Hindi, and every wrong word is taken off your speed.

Scaled typing score bands
Your net speed is turned into a scaled score. Recruiters often ask for a minimum band, not just a pass.
| Scaled score | English net WPM | Hindi net WPM |
|---|---|---|
| 50% (qualifying) | 30-40 | 20-25 |
| 60% | 41-50 | 26-30 |
| 70% | 51-60 | 31-35 |
| 80% | 61-70 | 36-40 |
| 90% | 71-80 | 41-50 |
| 100% | 81+ | 51+ |
Bands as reported by practice platforms from the CPCT scaled-score guidelines. Below 30 WPM English or 20 WPM Hindi the score is 0%.
What the exam screen looks like
A friendlier screen than most recruitment exams - but the clock is long.
| Screen rule | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Word highlighter | On - the current word is marked |
| Error highlighter | On - wrong words are marked |
| Auto-scroll | On |
| Backspace | Allowed throughout |
| Hindi layout | Chosen before the test - InScript or Remington GAIL |
| Order | English first, then Hindi |
As reported by candidates and practice platforms. Follow the instructions on your exam day.
Set up this practice test like the exam
This practice uses Word + error highlight, auto-scroll and full backspace, like the CPCT screen. Pick the Hindi layout you will choose on the day - InScript or Remington GAIL - and stay with it. Use Exam Mode to type English and Hindi back to back: 30 minutes of typing is a stamina test as much as a speed test.
Practise the 15-minute tests
Take the English and Hindi 15-minute tests and see your net speed, your scaled-score band and every wrong word.
How net speed is worked out
Count the words you typed, subtract every wrong word, and divide by 15 minutes. Over 15 minutes each wrong word costs about 0.07 WPM, so 15 wrong words cost a full WPM. Backspace is allowed, so a word fixed before you move on is not an error.
Which mistakes count
Errors are counted word by word: any wrong word is one error.
| Mistake | Example |
|---|---|
| Wrong or misspelt word | Typing "goverment" |
| Wrong matra or half letter | A missing halant in Hindi |
| Skipped word | Leaving out a word from the passage |
| Extra or repeated word | Typing "the the" |
| Joined words | Typing "MadhyaPradesh" |
| Capitalisation or punctuation | Typing "bhopal" for "Bhopal" |
As reported for CPCT: 1 error = 1 word deducted.
Worked example: an English test in the 50% band
Net words = words typed - wrong words
Net WPM = net words / 15 minutes
- Test length
- 15 minutes
- Words typed
- 540
- Wrong words
- 30
- Gross speed540 / 15= 36.0 WPM
- Net words540 - 30= 510
- Net speed510 / 15= 34.0 WPM
- Speed check34.0 against 30= clears
- Scaled score30-40 WPM band= 50%
TipHalving the wrong words to 15 gives 35 WPM - still the 50% band. To reach 60% you need 41+ WPM net, so speed matters as much as care here.
Worked example: a Hindi test that falls short
Net words = words typed - wrong words
Net WPM = net words / 15 minutes
- Test length
- 15 minutes
- Words typed
- 330
- Wrong words
- 45
- Gross speed330 / 15= 22.0 WPM
- Net words330 - 45= 285
- Net speed285 / 15= 19.0 WPM
- Speed check19.0 against 20= falls short
TipFifteen fewer wrong words would have given exactly 20.0 WPM. Use the backspace - it is allowed - to fix a word before moving on.
The mistake that fails most candidates
Practising in 5- or 10-minute bursts. CPCT runs for 15 minutes per language, back to back, and speed drops in the last five minutes when hands and eyes tire. Practise full 15-minute tests, and aim for 40+ WPM English and 28+ WPM Hindi net so you land comfortably above the qualifying band.
A four-week preparation plan
Four weeks to clear the bar - and move up a band.
| Week | Focus | English target | Hindi target | Wrong words |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Pick your Hindi layout and learn it. 5-minute tests. | 28 WPM | 15 WPM | Any - learn the keys |
| Week 2 | Full 15-minute tests, one language a day. | 32 WPM | 19 WPM | Under 30 |
| Week 3 | Exam Mode: English then Hindi in one sitting. | 36 WPM | 23 WPM | Under 20 |
| Week 4 | Daily Exam Mode runs, plus MCQ revision. | 40+ WPM | 28+ WPM | Under 15 |
What to practise, and what to avoid
Small habits decide a 30-minute typing section.
Do this
- Choose one Hindi layout - InScript or Remington GAIL - and stick to it.
- Practise full 15-minute tests, not short bursts.
- Use backspace to fix a word before you move on - it is allowed.
- Aim above the qualifying band; many posts ask for a higher scaled score.
- Revise the MCQ syllabus too - it is part of the same exam.
Avoid this
- Switching layouts between practice sessions.
- Racing in the first five minutes and fading at the end.
- Ignoring Hindi - 20 WPM in Hindi is harder than it looks.
- Leaving wrong words in place when you have time to fix them.
