About the DSSSB typing test

Ten minutes, one language, and a pass mark that is the same as SSC CHSL.

The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) recruits Junior Secretariat Assistants, LDCs, Junior Assistants and DASS Grade IV staff for Delhi government departments. After the written exam, shortlisted candidates take a typing skill test on computer.

The test is qualifying: it adds no marks to your merit, but you must reach 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi within the error limit. You type in the language you chose on your application form.

What the exam screen looks like

A plain screen-to-screen test where you can correct as you go.

Screen ruleWhat to expect
ModeScreen to screen - the passage is shown on the computer
BackspaceAllowed
Word / error highlighterNot confirmed - practise without one
Auto-scrollNot confirmed - practise scrolling yourself
PwBD candidates15 minutes instead of 10

The screen is described from recent DSSSB skill tests as reported by candidates and coaching platforms; highlighting and scrolling are not confirmed in any notice. Follow the instructions on your test day.

Set up this practice test like the exam

This practice runs with No highlighter, auto-scroll off and full backspace. If your exam screen turns out to highlight words, you will find it easier - practising without help is the safer habit. Pick the Hindi layout you will use on the day and stay with it.

Practise the 10-minute test

Take the 10-minute test in English or Hindi and see your net speed and every full and half mistake the moment you finish.

How the speed is worked out

Your key depressions are divided by 5 to give gross words. Full mistakes count 1 and half mistakes count 0.5; they are subtracted, and the result is divided by 10 minutes. 35 WPM means at least 1,750 key depressions in English, and 30 WPM means 1,500 in Hindi - type well above that, so the mistakes do not pull you under the line.

Which mistakes count

The SSC-style scheme DSSSB is reported to follow.

MistakeExampleCounts as
Omitted wordLeaving out a word from the passageFull
Wrong or misspelt wordTyping "goverment"Full
Extra or repeated wordTyping "the the"Full
Incomplete wordTyping "depart" for "department"Full
SpacingTyping "NewDelhi"Half
CapitalisationTyping "delhi" for "Delhi"Half
Punctuation or transpositionDropping a comma, swapping two wordsHalf

In Hindi, capitalisation does not apply.

Worked example: an English attempt that qualifies

The formula

Gross words = key depressions / 5

Mistakes = full + half x 0.5

Net WPM = (gross words - mistakes) / 10 minutes

The attempt
Test length
10 minutes
Key depressions
2,100
Mistakes
14 full, 6 half
Working it out
  1. Gross words2,100 / 5= 420
  2. Mistakes14 + 6 x 0.5= 17
  3. Net speed(420 - 17) / 10= 40.3 WPM
  4. Error %17 / 420 x 100= 4.0%
  5. Checks40.3 vs 35, 4.0% vs 7%= both clear
Qualified42 WPM gross with 17 mistakes leaves 40.3 WPM net and a 4% error rate.

TipTyping only the minimum 1,750 key depressions with the same mistakes would give 33.3 WPM - short of 35.

Worked example: a Hindi attempt that falls short

The formula

Gross words = key depressions / 5

Mistakes = full + half x 0.5

Net WPM = (gross words - mistakes) / 10 minutes

The attempt
Test length
10 minutes
Key depressions
1,560
Mistakes
20 full, 8 half
Working it out
  1. Gross words1,560 / 5= 312
  2. Mistakes20 + 8 x 0.5= 24
  3. Net speed(312 - 24) / 10= 28.8 WPM
  4. Speed check28.8 against 30= falls short
Not qualifiedEnough key depressions on paper, but 24 mistakes - mostly matras - take it under 30 WPM.

TipThe error rate here is 7.7% - over the 7% UR limit too, but under the 10% limit for reserved categories.

The mistake that fails most candidates

Typing at the speed instead of above it. 1,750 key depressions in 10 minutes is exactly 35 WPM - one mistake and you are under. Aim for 42+ WPM English or 36+ WPM Hindi with fewer than 15 mistakes, so the error limit and the speed both have room.

A four-week preparation plan

Four weeks to build a speed buffer above 35 / 30 WPM.

What to practise, and what to avoid

Small habits decide a qualifying test. Keep the left column; drop the right.

Do this

  • Practise in the language on your application form - it cannot be changed.
  • Use No highlighter and auto-scroll off.
  • Fix a wrong word with backspace as soon as you see it.
  • Start each paragraph the way the passage does - paragraph errors are half mistakes.
  • Type well above 1,750 / 1,500 key depressions.

Avoid this

  • Stopping at exactly 35 / 30 WPM gross.
  • Skipping a hard word - an omission is a full mistake.
  • Switching Hindi layouts between practice sessions.
  • Assuming the screen will mark your mistakes for you.
