Home row word drills — words without a single reach

Every word in this lesson can be typed with your fingers resting on A S D F and J K L ;. Nothing leaves the home row, which makes it the purest test of whether your fingers truly know where they live.

Why drill words you already know

You learned these keys in the first lessons, one or two at a time. Knowing a key and typing it inside a word, at speed, without thinking are different skills. Words such as flask, glass and salad force several home row fingers to fire in quick sequence, which single-key drills never do.

It is also the only row where no finger has to travel. That makes it the right place to build rhythm: if your timing is uneven here, it will be worse everywhere else.

What to watch

  • The little fingers. A and ; are pressed by your weakest fingers. Do not let the hand roll sideways to help them.
  • Double letters. all, add, glass and lass need two quick taps of one key. Keep the second tap as light as the first.
  • The semicolon. It separates the phrases in this lesson. Tap it with the right little finger and return home at once.

How to practise

Type each step at a pace where errors are rare. The goal is an even beat — every keystroke the same distance apart in time — rather than bursts followed by pauses. When the passages feel effortless, move on to the top row lesson, which uses exactly the same method.

Practice notes

Alfalfa and lakh in the challenge step are real words, chosen because they stay entirely on the home row. If they feel strange, that is the point: unfamiliar words make you rely on your fingers rather than on guesswork.
